EC Removes Officer-In-Charge From Poll Duty In Durgapur

Durgapur: The Election Commission (EC) on Sunday removed the officer-in-charge of Durgapur police station, Sujit Mukherjee, from election duty in response to a complaint received by it.

EC officials said that the complaint stated that Mukherjee did not stop a motorbike rally brought out by CPM leader Pankaj Ray Sarkar on Friday. All rallies on motorized two-wheelers are banned by the poll watchdog.
An official of EC said: “After investigation by the police observers, the officer was found guilty by R K Srivastava, principal secretary to the commission, who directed his removal from poll duty.” Mukherjee will be posted at a non-election zone and his substitute will be posted today,he added.
Voting will be held in Durgapur today in second part of the first phase of the Assembly polls.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission will “strictly scrutinize” booths that record more than 90 per cent or less than 10 per cent votes. The move comes in the wake of Opposition allegation of false voting by Trinamool on April 4. Many of the booths had on April 4 recorded a surge in the number of votes after the polling time and some had even registered a 100 per cent turnout. A booth in a West Midnapore village had on the electoral rolls names of several persons who are working elsewhere. A villager on the voter list was found to be long dead.
CPM state secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra had on April 7 expressed “dissatisfaction” with the poll panel's addressing of Opposition complaints and said the commission should play a “proactive role” to prevent intimidation of voters and polling agents by Trinamool. CPM central committee member Nilotpal Basu had met commission officials in Delhi to complain about alleged Trinamool threats.
