Mumbai: Legendary actor
Dilip Kumar was admitted to a hospital on early Saturday after he complained of
respiratory problems.
The actor was brought
to Lilavati hospital in Mumbai at around 2:30 AM on Saturday, hospital sources
said. Dr Jalil Parkar of Lilavati Hospital said “I got a call that he was
unwell. He had fever and had vomited a few times. He was suffering from
pneumonia as well. His white blood cells had shot up. We thought it would be
better to admit him to hospital.”
In an update, Dr Parkar
said that the actor would have to be shifted to ICU if “he didn’t recover well
in the next 48 hours”. He also said that the “next 72 hours are important”.
The 93-year-old legend was born as
Mohammad Yusuf Khan but adopted the screen name of Dilip Kumar.
In a career spanning
over six decades, the actor gave hits like Madhumati,
Devdas, Mughal-e-Azam, Ganga Jamuna, Ram Aur Shyam, Karma and others. He
was crowned as the 'Tragedy King' for playing a doomed lover in films like Andaz, Baabul, Mela, Deedar, Jogan and
others. He was last seen in the film Qila
in 1998.
Kumar was awarded Padma
Vibhushan in 2015. Earlier, he was honored with Padma Bhushan in 1991 and the
Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994 for his outstanding contribution to Indian
cinema.
He described as “the
ultimate method actor” by Satyajit Ray. He has received many awards throughout
his career, including 8 Filmfare Best Actor awards (A record he holds with
Shah Rukh Khan) and 19 Filmfare nominations.
