Kolkata: The Election Commission has issued a showcause notice to West
Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for violation of the model code of
conduct.
Chief Election Commissioner Naseem Zaidi on Thursday said: “It has been
brought to our notice that she made a promise of creation of Asansol district
and also made certain other utterances, for which the showcause has been
issued.”
Making fresh promises are barred under the model code of
conduct in election-bound states. Banerjee had made the promise at an election
rally in Asansol on April 8.
Banerjee, who heads the Trinamool Congress (TMC),
responded defiantly at an election meeting in Birbhum district. “I heard the
Election Commission has show-caused me. What I have said, I will say it again;
I will say it thousand times. I will say it a lakh times. Do whatever you like.
If anyone spread canards against me, I will seek answers,” she said.
The full bench of the Election Commission of India held
day-long meetings with police and administration officials and also met
delegations from various political parties ahead of the third phase of the
state assembly polls scheduled for April 17.
With the first phase of polling over, 56 constituencies in north Bengal
will go to the polls on April 17. The first phase, which was spread over two
days, recorded a high voter turnout. While 82.63 percent voted in 18
constituencies on April 4 in phase one part one voting, 79.51 percent voted in
another 31 constituencies on April 11 phase one part two voting .
The 2016 West Bengal Assembly Elections will decide who gets the 294
seats of the Vidhan Sabha in the state. The other phases will be held on April
21, 25, 30 and May 5.
