Kolkata: Amidst great concerns regarding the security level, Chief
Minister Mamata Banerjee is all set to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi later
this month to discuss the heightened security concerns in West Bengal,
following the terror attack in Bangladesh on Friday.
The move comes amid the Union Home Ministry issuing a red alert and
warning of possible attacks in West Bengal.
West Bengal has the longest border with Bangladesh among all the Indian
states— 2,217 km. With the Border Security Force (BSF) often describing the
border as “porous”, illegal immigration from Bangladesh to Bengal has long been
a concern for the Union government.
The meeting, likely at the end of the month, will
address the issues of terror, security concerns in Bengal and patrolling of the
border, said sources. “The meeting will be a follow-up of the concerns that the
Union Home Ministry has already shared. Bangladesh is a friendly country and
both our security forces and administration will do their best to help them
fight terrorism. The issues of concerns include infiltration into India,
particularly Bengal, following the attack,” said a state government official.
A central government official said, “The Centre
believes that the Bengal government has taken a soft stance on immigration… The
meeting will likely discuss the matter.” The state BJP, whose electoral
campaign hinged largely on the issue of illegal immigration from Bangladesh to
Bengal, has long maintained that madrasas along the border were “harboring
terrorists”.
