Kolkata: In order to provide cheap and natural gas to the
customers, West Bengal government on Tuesday has decided to avail an
alternative gas supply, by using the pipeline. The state government had
announced that the Greater Calcutta Gas Supply Corporation (GCGSC) will supply
gas in Kolkata and six other neighboring districts.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, after announcing her plan
of providing alternative gas supply service, has asserted that, “The people of
the state are facing a huge problem in getting a LPG connection. It is
expensive and sometimes it is beyond the reach of the common people. In this condition,
the state government has decided to create an alternative pipeline for supply
of gas that will be cheap and environment friendly.”
According to EXIN Times sources, the state government,
along with GCGSC will complete building their own pipeline network for supplying
gas in the next three years. ‘The supplier will then be decided on the basis of
competitive building,’ said another source from the state government.
The pipeline gas supplying company, GCGSC sources 1.80 lakh
cubic metre of gas from Dankuni Coal Complex, with a customer base of around
12,000. Contrarily, the state gas firm has 458 kms long gas pipeline which
serves Kolkata, North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah and Hooghly districts.
