Siliguri: As many as 10 wards of the Siliguri municipality
are announced to be in a flood-like situation following continuous heavy rains
in the last 24 hours. The rain also caused five landslides in the major north
Bengal city and its surroundings, interrupting the traffic movement.
The Siliguri met office has asserted that the heavy rain is
due to the active southwest monsoon active over sub-Himalayan Bengal and
Sikkim. “The axis of the monsoon trough at the mean sea level continues to run
in the foothills of the Himalayas. There is a forecast of more rainfall in the
region in the next four-five days.” The 1, 4, 5, 31, 32 and 33 number wards in
the Siliguri municipality are reported to be under water while the parts of the
town have been reported to be waterlogged.
Reports are that in the last 24 hours Siliguri has received
140 mm of rain. Sevoke has recorded 180 mm of shower, Bagdogra, Darjeeling and
Cooch Behar and Kalimpong have received 100mm, 50mm and 40mm rain respectively.
According to EXIN Times sources, landslides took place at
Chelaunayduhura in Pankhabari Road, Rati Khola area on Mirik Road, near
Kargiljhora on Rohini Road, on NH31 near Sevoke Kali Temple and on the
Karmatar-Jorethang Road.
Though no loss of life has been reported yet due to rain or
landslides but a person went missing from Siliguri. The youngman, Pawadhon Das,
22, took part in a game with his friend and challenged to swim the raging Mahananda
and come back. His friends said to EXIN Times sources that Das jumped into the
river., but could not be traced after that.
