Kolkata:
Police have arrested six of the accused, including the mastermind five days
after a gang of around eight miscreants reportedly looted valuables worth over
Rs 10 lakh at the residence of Amarnath Chakraborty in the posh Salt Lake
township of Kolkata.
Police
believe that the mastermind was the cook, employed at a nearby residence in the
CE Block and has been identified as Sitaram Das. Das, along with five
accomplices – Pappu Yadav (22) alias Pardesi, Manoj Kumar Das (18) alias
Congressi, Rajesh Kumar Yadav, Raja Halder (34) and Tapan Purkait (28) were
arrested by Bidhannagar Police late last night, DCP Santosh Pandey said
Wednesday.
Sitaram,
Pappu, Rajesh, Manoj — all residents of Bihar’s Banka district — were arrested
from Kestopur area while Raja and Tapan were picked up from Jharkhali and
Kultali areas respectively.
Pappu
planned the entire crime and contacted these people. He is the mastermind in
this case, because he knew the household very well,” Pandey said, adding that
the police were also looking whether anybody else was involved in the crime or
not.
Police
started suspecting Sitaram when he disappeared from the locality after being
grilled by detectives the day after the robbery. “We will press for TI parade
for a few among those arrested and police remand for others. We need to know
where they have kept the looted materials and what they have disposed off,”
Pandey said.
Sources in the Bidhannagar Police said some
of the looted items were recovered while many others were still missing.
