Rio Olympics Receives Online Threat from IS-Supported Brazilian Terrorist Group

Brasilia: Following an announcement by an Islamic State-backed Brazilian Islamist group, the Brazilian Intelligence Agency on Tuesday stepped up security and investigation in the country.

On Sunday, a terrorist group, calling itself ‘Ansar al-Khilafah Brazil’, has threatened next month’s Rio Olympics by using messaging app Telegram. The threat message, wrote in three languages- Arabic, English and Portuguese, clearly stated that they followed Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s IS propaganda and want to ‘wage jihad against the enemy of Allah.’ The news was confirmed by SITE Intelligence Group, who monitors the internet of the country.

Reports are that the police, armed forces and the investigating department of Brazil is meticulously inspecting all the threats related to Rio Olympics. Security measures were tightened more following the threat and the truck massacre in Nice last week.
Only one month before the Rio Olympics, which will start on August 5, will attract more than 500,000 visitors. However, terrorism experts from Brazil have noted that they doubt over the presence of Ansar al-Khilafah in Brazil. Brazil has a handful number of Muslim population, which is a chance of having minimum impact of Islamic extremism.
Earlier on Friday, Brazil said that had heightened security for the Olympics and it will be hard for any terrorist group to operate there. However, the repeated attacks by IS across the world that have claimed innocent lives, reportedly considered terrorism threat in Brazil is high.
