Kolkata: The Gangetic West Bengal, including capital
Kolkata, has received moderate rains in the weekend after a dry June, driest in
seven years. The Met office has said that the incessant rain is the first
downpour of this monsoon and has received 29.8mm rain only on Sunday. However,
the Met office has forecasted more rain in the next 48 hours in the city.
Reports are that the amount in parts of Kolkata varied but
Salt Lake in the eastern fringe received the highest-100 mm till Sunday morning
and more 50 mm during the rest of the day. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation
(KMC) has noted few cases of mishaps. A first floor balcony of a three-storey
building collapsed at Posta on Sunday. Places like Karunamoyee, City Centre
rotary, Chinar Park, Dumdum and VIP road were found flooded due to heavy
rains.
As the EXIN Times reports has asserted, the normal
temperature of Kolkata saw a sharp downfall to four degrees below normal, to
28.5 degrees Celsius. Maximum rainfall was recorded at Digha in the last 24
hours. Heavy rain was predicted for the sub-Himalayan west Bengal in
Darjeeling, Coochbehar and Jalpaiguri districts for the next two days.
A senior official from the Alipore Meteorological Office
has asserted that a low pressure area is entering towards the Bengal coast from
Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coastline. The low-pressure area is increasing
moisture intake from the Bay of Bengal. Last evening, as the satellite images
depicted, the low pressure zone was spread over Jharkhand, Odisha and south
Bengal. It will lose its strength till Tuesday and Bengal has to wait for the
next spell of rain until another low-pressure zone is created.
