Southwest Monsoon Reaches Kolkata

Kolkata: The much awaited Southwest monsoons have finally reached Kolkata, as the city has been receiving good showers for the past couple of days.

In the last 24 hours, the capital city of the state has received 15mm of rains. In fact, light rains have been witnessed over the city since morning hours. Also, patchy rains continue to hover over the city. While the normal onset date over Kolkata is June 10, the onset has been delayed by about a week.
However, now as monsoon is here, rainfall intensity will increase over Kolkata and its adjoining areas. In fact, good showers will be observed over the city of joy in the coming days. So far, Kolkata has recorded 136.1 mm of rain against its monthly average of 283.5 mm.
With monsoon making its onset over the city, surpassing the monthly average will not be too difficult. In fact, double digit rains in the coming days will be a common affair. Thus, the residents of Kolkata can finally bathe in monsoon rains. Now, weather conditions will also improve, i.e. temperatures will also witness a drop as continuous rains will be observed over the city.
These rains can be attributed to the cyclonic circulation, which is currently over Bihar and adjoining West Bengal. Also, a trough is extending from this system up to North Bay of Bengal across Orissa and West Bengal.
Southwest monsoon follows the pre-monsoon rains that the city witnessed a couple of days back. Southwest monsoon also means the commencement of Monsoon rains in Kolkata.
