Sanand:
On Thursday, a fire at a facility run by a vendor to Tata Motors Ltd’s Sanand
plant in Gujarat damaged raw materials, machinery, finished goods and a
building shed.
The
fire, which broke out around 1:30PM, was brought under control after two hours
by ten fire tenders, said Rajesh Bhatt, additional chief fire officer,
Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services, adding that there were no causalities.
The extent of the damage was not immediately known.
In a
statement given by Tata Motors, the company said: “A fire broke out at one of
our vendor M/S Supreme Treaves, our supplier partner of trim parts for the Nano
in the vendor park. The fire is under control now and no injuries were
reported. We are ascertaining the extent of damage. This has no impact on the
Tiago production.”
While
the Forensic Science Laboratory will be investigating the cause of the fire at
the plant run by Supreme Treaves, Bhatt said over the phone that it may have
been caused by an electric short circuit. Supreme Treaves supplies rubber
matting to Tata Motors.
The
Tata Motors factory, which has an annual production capacity of 250,000 units
and is spread over an area of 725 acres, is adjacent to a 375 acre vendor park
that houses all major component suppliers for the Tiago and the Nano.
The
Sanand manufacturing facility began commercial production of the Nano small
car, billed as the world’s cheapest car, in 2010. The company had then signed a
state-support agreement with the Gujarat government to exclusively manufacture
the Nano at the Sanand plant. It recently began manufacturing the Tiago
hatchback at the same facility.
