Hyderabad: following the unusual development of polio
viruses in sewage near Hyderabad city, the Telangana state government has set
up 756 booths in the capital city and 116 more booths in Ranga Reddy district
to administer the special vaccination program.
EXIN Times reports said that parents of an estimated 2.1
lakh children, who are below three years of old, have been asked to attend the
immunization program.
The vaccination program will continue from Monday to June
26 while field officers, government doctors and pediatricians have roped in to
alert parents, especially young mothers.
The central government had announced the county as a
polio-free nation on 2011. The last case of wild polio virus has been detected
that year. It has been five years till then when a discovery of polio virus in
the southern state of the country heightened the alert.
Reports are that the Telangana state health administration is
aided by UNICEF and WHO for this program, had conducted a survey in the state
and chalked out high risk areas. Apart from that, the survey has put special
emphasis on the vicinity with most water-bodies in it. The area where the virus
was found is also under scan.
The state government has also announced that the
vaccination campaign is a precautionary measure to prevent infections.
Apart from oral polio vaccination, the state will procure as
many as 3.5 lakh doses of vaccine by injection.
“Parents should know that the vaccine is safe. If there are
any adverse reactions to the vaccine, which is highly unlikely, emergency teams
will be on standby to respond to such situations. All public and private
hospitals have also been notified,” said Dr. G. Srinivas Rao, Commissioner,
Health and Family Welfare.
The state have imported 200,000 vaccines from Geneva for
the immunization drive and had specially trained medical volunteers, anganwadi
workers, community resource persons and NGO activists, said the EXIN Times
sources.
