Kolkata: Late on Thursday, the Indian cricket team got its
new head coach- Anil Kumble. After much speculation on who will be preferred
between Ravi Shastri and Anil Kumble by the three-member cricket advisory panel
appointed by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), comprising eminent
cricketers Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman- Kumble’s name was
announced, EXIN Times sources reported.
Last month, BCCI announced that the board is seeking a new
head coach for the Indian cricket team who will guide the team across the three
formats, both in home and internationally. Following the announcement, as many
as 57 applications were received by BCCI then shortlisted only 21. The final 21
names included prominent cricket personalities like Sandeep Patil, Ravi
Shastri, Vikram Rathour, Praveen Amre, Balwinder Sandhu, Venkatesh Prasad,
Stuart Law and Anil Kumble.
The post was vacant from earlier this year when Ravi
Shastri’s one-year-contract ended with BCCI.
BCCI President Anurag Thakur, while addressing a press
release in Dharamsala, said: “The CAC recommended a few names to the BCCI.
After discussions with various stakeholders, we have taken the final call that
for next one year Anil Kumble will be the head coach.” Rest of the support
staffs will be selected and appointed once Kumble joins, Thakur added.
Kumble is appointed as the head coach of the team for one
year, but his performance may release the place to reassess. Also, he is the
first Indian to be appointed as the full time India coach after Kapil Dev, dev
reigned in 2000.
