Telangana Government Announces Country Polio-Free After Virus Found In Sewage

Hyderabad: Hours after the Telangana government has declared an alert in Hyderabad city, another statement released from the state authority said that the country is polio-free.

On Tuesday, the Telangana government was forced to announce a polio-alert in the state capital, the virus was found in water sample collected from a drain at Amberpet in Hyderabad. The wild polio virus, vaccine derived polio virus type II, therefore forced the Telangana government to immediately arrange two lakh vaccines from Geneva to vaccinate around three lakh children of the state. India was a polio-free country since in 2011 as the central government has announced complete eradication of the disease from the nation.
“The country has eradicated the wild polio virus and the last case was seen on 13th January, 2011, and it is more than five years that no wild polio virus has been detected,” as the official statement has asserted noting that the resurface of the polio virus is not true.
EXIN Times sources said that the statement released by the Telangana government explained thoroughly the type of the polio virus. Being a vaccine derived poliovirus or VDPV, the statement said that detection of the virus does not change the polio-free status of India. “It only indicates the robustness of the surveillance system and willingness of the country to detect any kind of polio virus even from the environment (sewage),” the statement stated.

Following the stir, the Hyderabad city authority has announced a weeklong polio vaccination campaign to 3,50,000 children, all aged between six weeks and three years, which will start on Monday.
