Gulmarg Society Lynching Case 11 Convicted for Murder, 13 Charged With Lesser Crimes; Families Dissatisfied

Ahmadabad: 11 people have been convicted for murder while 13 more were charged with lesser offences for the Gulmarg Society lynching that took place in Ahmadabad, killing 69 people at 2002. The list also includes former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, acquitting BJP corporator Bipin Patel with more 36 people.
The special trial court, deployed by the Supreme Court, released its verdict on Thursday, evoking negative responses from families of the dead. Activists working against the lynching that was followed by the heinous Gujarat violence in 2002 said that they will continue their fight for justice.

“More than half of them have been acquitted, which shows that the verdict and the investigation were not up to mark. It is like half justice. I will have to continue my legal battle,” said Zakia Jafri, widow of Ehsan Jafri, who was killed in the violence. “Justice has been only half delivered,” she added.

Ms. Jafri also accused Narendra Modi, the then Chief Minister of Gujarat and said that he was unable to protect his fellow citizens during the communal violence of 2002 that saw killing of thousands of people.

Reports are that the Gulbarg massacre is among the major incidences that took place at 2002. The riot was followed by investigations by a special investigation team appointed by the apex court. Also houses were set on fire, residents were dragged out of their home and burnt to death. Ehsan Jafri has the same fate coupled with frantic calls to all his friends and connections that went unanswered. The Gulbarg society was attacked by a mob on February 28, 2002. Only a day after the Sabarmati Express were burnt with 59 passengers in it.
