Kolkata: The first
phase of assembly elections in West Bengal passed of peacefully on Monday with
80 percent voters turning up for voting in the 18 West Bengal constituencies.
While 81.66 percent
voters cast their ballot in West Midnapore district, the figure was 80.59
percent in Bankura, and 80.18 percent in Purulia. Till 6.30 PM, the overall
polling percentage was 80.92.
The scheduled time of
polling was reduced by two hours in six insurgency-hit constituencies of West
Midnapore, four in Purulia and three in Bankura districts. The elections got
over at 4 PM in these constituencies.
Total number of voters
in the constituencies are a little over 40 lakh (40,09,171), out of which
20,47,202 are males and 19,61,953 are females, whereas 16 voters belong to the
third gender category. There are total of 4,945 polling stations out of which
1,962 have been classified as critical ones by the Election Commission.
Phase one (a) of the
election will decide the fate of 133 candidates, including 11 women, fighting
from the 18 constituencies.
In Assam, the turnout
figure for the 65 seats in 14 districts of Upper Assam and Barak Valley also
stood at 80 percent on Monday. Polling in 65 constituencies of upper Assam and
Barak Valley will determine if the BJP can snatch the state away from the
three-time Congress chief minister Tarun Gogoi.
The 2016 West Bengal
Assembly Elections will decide who gets the 294 seats of the Vidhan Sabha in
the state. The second polling date of the first phase is on April 11. The other
phases will be held on April 17, 21, 25, 30 and May 5.
