Mahidpur: Police in India shaved the
head of a suspect after he attacked an officer and then tied him to the bonnet
of one of their vehicles before they drove it around the town.
The police constables allegedly
exacted vengeance on Abdul Qadir after he attacked Shyam Chandra Sharma, who
was in charge at the station in Mahidpur, which is in India’s Ujjain district.
Two police constables and a sub-inspector
have been suspended following the incident, which took place after violence
erupted in the town when a fight broke out between bike-racing youngsters on
May 30.
Police claimed that Qadir, a resident
of Jamalpura Todi, was wanted by officers and had taken advantage of chaos that
took place during the violence, before he attacked Sharma.
The inspector and his team had
intervened when Qadir and his family members, including women, were damaging
vehicles after police used strength to gain control over the stone pelting that
followed the fighting in the town.
Sharma had sustained a fracture on
his collar bone and a constable also suffered injuries on his leg during the
attack.
Police had arrested Qadir, his wife
Aabida Bi and relatives Huma, Sahiba and others for attacking the policemen.
It was reported that on Thursday
officers arrested Qadir and beat him up. His head was shaved and he was forced
to wear a garland made of slippers before policemen tied him to the bonnet of a
police jeep and paraded him through the markets of Mahidpur.
Madhu Kumar, Ujjain inspector general
of police, said, “The action was unwarranted. A case was already
registered against the accused and legal action was on. We have suspended a sub-inspector
and two constables.”
Qadir was later produced before court
and sent on judicial remand.
