Kolkata: The fifth phase Assembly election,
scheduled to be on April 30 comprising three districts of the state and 53
constituencies in a whole. Following the heavyweight candidates who will decide
their fates tomorrow includes Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and four other
‘scam tainted’ leaders of the Trinamool Congress seen in the Narada sting video.
Following the fifth phase on the verge, all 53
constituencies in South Kolkata, Hooghly and South 24-Parganas had been imposed
with prohibitory orders by the election commission. According to reports, the EC has ordered
the central forces to start night patrolling in the sensitive areas from
Wednesday while the number of central police was doubled to keep a close eye in
the city and districts.
Section 144 of CrPC, which ‘regulates the assembly
of five or more people in one place,’ will be enforced strictly in all the
constituencies where polling will be held this time, said reports. Following
their strict vigilance in the fourth phase, at Howrah and North 24 Parganas,
the state missed any major violence. A senior poll panel official said: “Considering
the sensitivity of some of the constituencies going to polls on Saturday, we
have launched night patrol by central forces.”
Also, the fifth phase on Saturday will witness the
second largest deployment of central forces-680 companies, 20 companies less
than phase III. “They will also conduct patrols along rivers as there are some
major rivers in South 24-Parganas and Hooghly. Borders have already been sealed
and naka checking by both static and flying surveillance squads have been
initiated,” a senior EC official said.
