New Delhi: Liquor baron Vijay Mallya, from his exiled
address, has asserted that the Indian government is pursuing a ‘heavily biased
investigation’ and is leading to a ‘genuine business failure.’
Mallya, who owes banks Rs. 9000 crore in unpaid loans to
his now defunct Kingfisher Airlines, said on Sunday that the move undertaken by
Enforcement Directorate (ED) ‘to provisionally attach his movable and immovable
properties and that of United Breweries Holdings Ltd (UBHL) will make it
difficult to raise money to repay the banks.’
In a press release, Mallya said that, “Appears as if these
agencies are pursuing a heavily biased investigation and are already holding me
guilty without trial after which I need to prove my innocence.”
Meanwhile, the ED had attached Mallya’s properties worth
Rs. 1411 crore in a loan default case. ED said that the attachment was made
following Mallya’s loan of Rs. 900 crore to IDBI bank. The statement by the
ex-business tycoon in the press release also had asserted that criminal
allegations against him were being connected to loan recoveries which were
‘purely civil matters.’
60-year-old Mallya had kleft for UK on March 2 and was
later reported to be in a country in London since then. He was also an
ex-lawmaker and Rajya Sabjha MP but resigned anticipating expulsion.
