Ahmadabad: The special SIT court that was established to
investigate the proceedings of Gulbarg society massacre, today has deferred the
pronouncement of the quantum of sentence to June 9. Also, the hearing has
issued capital punishment for the 11 convicted of murder while the lawyer of
the victims pleaded the court for life imprisonment for them.
Gulbarg society was attacked by a raging mob on 28 February
2002, during the Gujarat communal riot on the same year and brutally killed
many of the residents of the residential complex, including former Congress MP
Ehsan Jafri. On June 2 this year, the special court judge P.B. Desai had
convicted 24 of the 66 accessed of the massacre.
Reports are that of the total 66 accused, six dies during
the trial period. Among the 24 convicted, 11 have been charged with murder
cases while rest of the 13, including VHP leader Atul Vaidya, have been
convicted for ‘lesser offences.’
