Orlando: Day 6 at the Copa
America brought plenty of goals and no surprises. Brazil was dominant on the
night in Orlando, Florida, and Ecuador and Peru provided an exciting match
filled with creativity and emotion. Here's the Copa America scoreboard and
things to know as Group B played its second set of matches.
Brazil do a Germany as they beat Haiti 7-1 and Coutinho scores a great
hat-trick. To be fair, Brazil were great as this was a team who pushed
Peru all the way and nearly scored an equalizer. Haiti can take solace in their
goal and the fact that Placide was great in so many moments. I know, it’s a
weird thing to say about a goalie who let seven in.
The good thing to see was that by the end Brazil were reminding us of
how they could play when they’re in the mood but things will only get tougher
from now. The true test will come in the knock-out stages.
Neymar’s absence, plus a string of injuries, left Brazil at less than
full strength, and a 0-0 tie with Ecuador in a match Brazil would have lost but
for a favorable call only added to the mood of pessimism surrounding the
five-time World Cup champions.
Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho stepped up and scored a hat trick to lead Brazil past
the hapless Haitians. He scored from distance in the 14th minute and added a
second goal just before the half-hour mark. Coutinho and Chelsea's Willian ran
the Haiti defense ragged and fellow midfielder Renato Augusto added two goals. The biggest cheer of the evening at Camping World
Stadium, though, came when the Carolina RailHawks’ James Marcelin scored for Haiti.
Copa America 2016 is the 45th edition of the tournament.
