The Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University has
proposed to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with foreign
universities for student and faculty exchange and training programmes. Three
universities — Stanford, Harvard and University of California — are being
considered for a MoU, said Vice Chancellor S. Geetalakshmi.
She announced this at the inauguration of GECON2016, a
conference on ‘Advances in gastroenterology for physicians and surgeons’, organized
by Medindia Hospitals. The programme would include medical college hospitals
affiliated to the University. The details about the type of training and its
duration would depend on the MoU.
Doctors must take up research and innovate, anticipating
the complications that diseases could bring in future, she said, adding that
student from Sivaganga Medical College had come up with a crude instrument that
could be maneuvered externally to do an endoscopic procedure. The instrument
had been forwarded to Anna University to be developed further.
The government, through the Chief Minister’s Health
Insurance Scheme, had enabled to provide free vaccines and tablets for
Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C. As of now, over 700 patients were registered,
screened and were being administered treatment, mainly at the Government
General Hospital and Stanley Hospital, she said.
T.S. Chandrasekar, founder chairman of MedIndia
Hospitals, said the aim of the conference was to highlight the advances in the
minimally invasive endoscopic treatment for GI diseases.
The hospital now had the latest spyglass and laser
lithotripsy that helped avoid major surgeries. Around 300 delegates
participated in the meet.
