Rio de Janeiro: The two Indian swimmers that were competing at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Sajan Prakash ans Shivani Kataria, had to settle with only their heats as competition time. Both swimmers, as expected, made an early exit from the Games and have no competition left.
In the
women’s 200m freestyle, Shivani was second in her heats but didn’t qualify on
the basis of other classification points of swimmers from other heats. She
finished 41st out of the total 43 swimmers after clocking 2:09:30 minutes.
Kathleen Ledecky of the US clocked 1:55:01 minutes to top the list followed by
Australia's Emma Mckeon at the second spot in 1:55:80 minutes and Sweden's
Sarah Sjostrom ended third in 1:56:11 minutes.
In the
men’s 200m butterfly heats, Sajan finished a disappointing fourth out of
five swimmers and didn’t come close to qualifying for the finals. In the
end, Sajan finished 28th amongst the 29 swimmers on the basis of his
timings. Sajan clocled 1:59:37 minutes in his heat and failed
to qualify for the next round. Hungarians Tamas Kenderesi and Laszlo Cseh
topped the list clocking 1:54:73 and 1:55:14 minutes respectively while South
African Chad Guy Bertrand Le Clos took 1:55:57 minutes to come third.
On the other hand, the
Indian men’s hockey team suffered an agonising 2-1 defeat at the hands of
Germany in their Pool B encounter at the Rio Olympics on Monday. The two teams
were tied 1-1 with three seconds remaining on the clock, before Christopher
Ruhr scored for Germany to sink India. The loss sends India to third in their
pool, while Germany went top.
