Dengue Deaths at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Initiate Parents’ Protest

Kolkata: One day after two students of Salt Lake's Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan died at Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals suffering dengue and haemorrhagic shock, the state government has asked schools across the state to clean the premises so that dengue-carrying mosquito Aedes aegypti doesn't breed.

Reports are that the two students, Purbita Hazra (8) and Bibhoshan Guha Thakurta (9) died hemorrhagic shock. Dengue has been confirmed only as the cause of death in Purbita’s case.
Following the deaths, more than 100 parents gathered outside the school on Monday and urged for proper sanitation in the school. The parents also complained about cleanliness in the school while accused the school authority for ‘neglecting the issue’ for long.
Rekha Vaisya, Principal of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, has said: “We are getting complaints despite the fact that we regularly clean toilets. We have to look into it and do the needful. The primary section will be shut for a week and in that time we will arrange for the surroundings to be absolutely cleaned.”
The school has announced that the primary section will remain shut from three days, from August 2-5, while the secondary will be closed only for Tuesday.
School education minister Partha Chaterjee on Monday asked schools throughout the state to take preventive measures to stop spreading dengue.
