Rahul Dev Burman, the Indian
musician-scorer-composer-songwriter entered into his 77th birthday
today. The ocean of talent of Indian music, popularly known as Pancham or Panchan Da even found his place at the search bar of search engine
Google, in the form of Google Doodle.
R.D Burman was to another famous composer S.D Burman and
his lyricist wife Meera Dev Burman on June 27, 1939 in Kolkata. He
composed music for over 3000 movies and is considered as the most influential
music director of all times. Pancham
started his music career at the age of nine by writing sar jot era chakraye. Later his father Sachin Dev Burman included
the song in film Pyasaa.
In the 1970’s, Pancham was closely associated and with
Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkaer, Asha Bhosle and Rajesh Khanna and also
collaborated with these eminent personalities of the Mumbai, the then Bombay
music fraternity. RD was famous for using beer bottles, cups, spoons and
saucers to create magical effects to his compositions. He was a forefather of
disco and hip hop music.
Reports are that out of the 331 released film music by
Burman, 292 were in Hindi, 31 in Bengali, 3 in Telugu, 2 each in Tamil and
Oriya, and 1 in Marathi. He has also composed for 5 TV Serials in Hindi and
Marathi.
He won three film fare awards for Sanam Teri Kasam, Masoom and 1942:
A Love Story in 1983, 1984 and 1995 respectively. His other musical works
include in films like Caravan, Aap Ki
Kasam, Mehbooba, Sagar, Sholay, Ijazaat, Ghar, Gol Mal, Khubsoorat and so on.
Burman died in an early age of 54 on 1992.
