Bihar Topper Arrested After Allegedly Failing in the Re-Examination

Patna: Ruby Rai, the Bihar School Examination Board’s (BSEB) topper from the arts stream was arrested on Saturday following t re-examination of total 14 candidates. This action was a follow up of Rai’s interview to a local TV channel after the board results where she said that, “Prodikal (read political) science is about cooking.”

Apart from Ruby, non-bailable arrest warrant was also issued against the three other toppers - science topper Saurbabh Shrestha, third topper Rahul Kumar and Shalini Rai. Ruby was accused of cheating earlier this month when BSEB has ordered a special task force to investigate the matter.
Reports are that during her re-test, Rai said to the panel of examiners that she read the syllabus for two long years for the final board examinations but forgot by now. “She claimed to have studied for the examination for two years but could not remember anything,” said one of the examiners in the panel, requesting his anonymity. “Her answer shocked the entire panel and everyone was left wondering how this girl had topped,” he added later.
Rai is a 17-year-old student who scored 444 out of 500 in the Class 12 board examinations. She had been sent to Beur jail in Patna and will have to prove her being a juvenile before the court taken any action against her.
Reports are that the Ruby Rai’s arrest has unveiled a part of Bihar’s educational system that was already under scan but managed to out-focus the spotlight from last few years. The BSEB is already infamous for supporting cheating rackets and allowing wrong candidates for board examinations.
Following Rai’s arrest, former BSEB chairman Lalkeshwar Prasad and his wife, who is a former Janata Dal-United MLA were arrested with 20 more people by the special investigation team.
