Kolkata: In a major security lapse, a
man posing as a Major General entered into the Indian Army’s Eastern Command
headquarters at Fort William earlier Thursday evening. The impostor was later
arrested while clicking photographs of the premises.
“This man had been spotted earlier
inside the Fort William campus over the past few weeks. He has been
masquerading as a major general. He usually comes in his own car, which made us
suspicious. When he turned up in the evening today and started taking
photographs, the police was informed,” said pro eastern command wing commander
S S Birdi.
Identified as PK Mitra, the accused
was caught when he was clicking photos inside the Fort William on Wednesday.
Wearing an army officer’s uniform, he had claimed that he was a major general
in the Army.
The man was then detained by the military
police and handed over to the Maidan police station, where he is being
interrogated to find out whether he is a spy or not.
“We don’t know what the reason (for
his intrusion) was. It is up to the police to find out if there was an actual
threat or if he did this just for fun,” said Birdi.
On interrogation by army and the
police, it was found that his father is a retired defence officer. Officials
said he had been visiting various civil clubs and other civil institutions
claimin to be a major general in the Army.
