TMC MLA Stops CPM Blood Donation Camp For Flyover Collapse Victims

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Nirmal Maji directed the state’s premier blood bank to stop a blood donation camp, allegedly because Left supporters were donating blood for the treatment of the Kolkata flyover accident victims.
The blood donation camp at Maniktala Blood Bank was organized by the Students' Federation of India (SFI) and Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), student youth wings of the CPI(M). The camp was organized to ensure smooth supply of blood to the injured being treated in different hospitals.
Speaking on the incident, a member of the SFI said that they conducted the camp at the Central Blood Bank in Maniktala area around 5 pm. But Maji and local TMC councilor, MLA and others came after some time and asked them to shut the camp, saying there was enough blood to supply. “We could conduct the camp for only two and half hours. In this time, 186 people had given blood while many others couldn't give. People came from distant districts to give blood,” he further added.
Defending her party member, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said: “There is no need of doing politics with blood. We have sufficient stock of blood and right now one lakh people can donate blood if I ask them to do so.”
Rajib Majumder, CPI(M) candidate contesting from Maniktala assembly seat, said: “We have never seen such dirty politics with blood at a time when most of the state-run blood banks have dwindling reserves. Today our boys and girls have again donated blood at the Maniktala blood bank. Initially the authorities were reluctant to take blood from us today. We have requested all people cutting across their political color to donate blood for the injured people”.
At least 25 people were killed and 100 were injured and some others are feared still trapped as a portion of a flyover under construction collapsed on a congested road intersection in Girish Park area of Kolkata on Thursday, crushing people and vehicles.
