Kanpur

Located on the banks of river Ganga, Kanpur is one of the most prominent industrial and commercial cities of India. But what most people don’t realize is the fact that it is also one of the most underrated tourist destinations of the country.

Kanpur has an area of over 1,200 km² (fifth largest city in India) and had a population of around 6.1 million in the 2008 census. Kanpur is home to several educational institutions, including an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-Kanpur), CSJM University, Harcourt Butler Technological Institute (HBTI), University Institute of Engineering and Technology, GSVM Medical College and Dr Ambedkar Institute of Technology (AITH).
Kanpur is a historical place which is wrapped with royal and divine tales. Even its name itself has a prominent story in one of our great epic, Mahabharata. It is believed that Duryodhana rewarded this region Karna for his excellence in bravery in comparison with Arjuna. That is why it was previously named after Karna and was called as Karnapur. Soon it had been converted into Kanpur. It is said that it was once named as Kanhaiyapur following the name of Lord Krishna and afterwards transformed into Kanpur.
Kanpur Barrack Junction is linked with all foremost cities of India. Frequent rail services are there in the route connecting Lucknow with Kanpur (80 km) as well as Delhi with Kanpur (438 km). Delhi and Lucknow Airport is connected with Kanpur. Delhi is the adjoining major airport which connects this city with all Indian cities along with abroad. Delhi is just about 438 km from the city. Flights from Delhi to Kanpur are easily available. After reaching Delhi, there are multiple ways to know how to reach Kanpur.
A city with rich history, it has numerous forts, temples and gardens to please the visiting tourists. Asia’s biggest zoological garden is also in Kanpur. The adjoining areas of Kanpur, like Jajmau and Bithoor, hold mythological importance as well. Kanpur was also the centre point of the first war of Indian Independence of 1857.
The places of interest in Kanpur includes Allen Forest Zoo, Green Park Stadium, Moti Jheel, Phool Bagh, Shri Radhakrishna Temple, ISKCON Kanpur, Blue World Amusement Park, Kanpur Memorial Church, among others.

Kanpur has been part of history which is reflected in its very essence.
